Syride Evo V2: the alti-vario-GPS for cross-country and competition pilots

Seven years after the first Evolution, Syride has renewed its flagship flight instrument. The Evo V2 packs an altimeter, a variometer, a multi-constellation GPS, navigation, airspace management and full Bluetooth connectivity into a unit weighing just 270 g including the mount and only 1.5 cm thick. Designed and made in France, it is built for pilots who fly cross-country, vol-biv or competitions and want a large, readable screen without cluttering their cockpit.

Our verdict on this alti-vario-GPS

"The Evo V2 is the instrument we recommend to pilots who are starting to fly regular cross-country or aiming for competition. The large E-Ink screen is effortless to read in full sunshine, the pages switch automatically between thermalling and gliding so you don't have to touch the instrument in flight, and the airspace alerts are invaluable as soon as you get close to the Clermont-Ferrand controlled airspace. For a pilot just out of school it is often more than you need: a GPS V4 or a Nav XL will do the job very well. But if you want to fly far, it is one of the best compromises on the market between weight, screen size and battery life, backed by responsive French after-sales support."

What's new compared with the Evo V1

  • Up to 5 times faster: much smoother menus and screen refresh, the V1's slowdowns are gone.
  • Instant vario: additional sensors make the beep start and stop almost immediately, so you can core thermals faster.
  • Completely redesigned mapping: terrain relief, roads, towns and peaks, thermal hotspots by time of day and season, power lines, airfields, FAI triangle sectors.
  • Bluetooth and the Syride app (Android and iOS): settings, flight uploads and route imports without a computer.
  • Optional ADS-L module, USB-C charging and a speaker with a smoother, more progressive sound.

A 6-inch E-Ink screen you can read in full sunshine

The 6" electronic-ink display (800 x 600 pixels) stays perfectly readable in bright sunlight while using very little power. More than ten screens are fully customisable with the SSC Tool, and the instrument can switch pages automatically depending on the phase of flight: entering a thermal, gliding, approaching an airspace or a waypoint. The touchscreen works with gloves on, a real bonus in winter or at altitude.

Navigation, airspace and competition

Routes and tasks are prepared in the mobile app or with Syride's Route Maker, then loaded in seconds, including via QR code, which makes sharing a competition task very easy. The GOTO function takes you straight to a waypoint, and your take-off is saved automatically so you can head back to it. Airspace files can be imported in OpenAir format for an entire country, with alerts as you approach.

Live tracking, Buddies and weather stations

Paired with your phone via Bluetooth, the Evo V2 shares your position live on syride.com, ideal to reassure your family or follow a group on a cross-country flight. The Buddies function shows connected pilots around you on the map, and live data from weather stations is displayed in real time to help you make decisions in flight.

ADS-L: collision avoidance with no subscription

The Evo V2 can be fitted with an optional ADS-L module. This air-traffic surveillance protocol, designed under EASA regulations, automatically broadcasts your position to other equipped aircraft to reduce the risk of collision. It is an open, subscription-free alternative to proprietary systems such as FLARM, particularly useful on busy sites or in airspace shared with light aviation.

Things to know before you buy

  • Pressure-sensitive touchscreen: it needs a firm press, unlike a smartphone. That is what makes it usable with gloves, but it takes a few flights to get used to.
  • Switch it on during your pre-flight check: after a long time switched off or a long journey, the first GPS fix can take several minutes.
  • Heat: a safety cut-off disconnects the battery if it overheats. Don't leave it in direct sunlight behind the windscreen.
  • Glare: polarised sunglasses can darken parts of the screen depending on the viewing angle.
  • Battery life: rated at 15 to 25 hours depending on Bluetooth and live tracking use, more than enough for several days of cross-country flying.

Who is it for?

The Evo V2 is aimed at independent pilots who fly cross-country, hike & fly or competitions, as well as paramotor pilots navigating long distances. If you have just finished your training and mostly fly locally, a simpler instrument from the Syride range (GPS V4 or Nav XL) will cover your needs for a smaller budget.
