Paragliding cross-country progression course

Objectives:

Plan a cross-country flight and apply a strategy. Improve efficiency in lift, and active piloting techniques. Enjoy flying as a group, safely. Prepare for the BPC certification.

Who is it for?

For pilots holding a Pilot Certificate, who regularly fly long local flights (1h30), or who have already “flown beyond the local area,” and who wish to be supported as they venture into cross-country flying.

Group of up to 6 students, with two instructors.

Practice locations:

Primarily the Massif Central (Sancy / Cantal). If conditions are deemed sufficiently favorable, flights may also take place in the Northern Alps (Chartreuse, Bauges, Vercors, Belledonne, etc.).

Practical and theoretical content:

  • How to ensure safety (group flying, flying close to terrain, landing out, monitoring changing conditions, use of the reserve parachute, etc.)
  • Climbing: thermal optimization (piloting attitude, centering/ovaling)
  • Transition work (line choice, drift management)
  • Positioning and route choice during ridge and terrain flying phases
  • Strategy according to height within the convective layer, pace management
  • Mental management
  • Aerology, advanced weather analysis, and planning a route accordingly
  • Airspace awareness (charts, tools, etc.)
  • Flight debriefings based on GPS tracks, and areas for improvement
  • Equipment insights (wings, harnesses, flight instruments, etc.)

Personal equipment required:

  • Certified paraglider wing and harness equipped with passive protection
  • Reserve parachute repacked within the last year
  • Certified helmet
  • Radio (ideally with a remote microphone for easy in-flight communication)
  • Suitable warm clothing, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, hydration pack, food for the day
  • Bivouac equipment if part of the course is run in an itinerant format
